TERRAFORM INDUSTRIES – MOVING THE UNMOVABLE
Share
The Client: TerraForm Industries, a manufacturer of large-scale geothermal energy turbines.
The Industry: Project Cargo & Heavy Lift
The Problem: TerraForm won a contract to supply a single, massive turbine rotor weighing 85 tons to a remote power plant in the Chilean Andes. The component was too large for standard containers, too heavy for most road axles, and the final destination was 200 km up a winding mountain road. No single logistics provider wanted to take on the end-to-end risk.
Rock Global Logistics' Solution:
Specialized Engineering & Route Survey: Rock Global's project cargo team conducted a full virtual and on-site survey of the entire route—from the factory in Germany to the port, the Chilean port of discharge, and the mountain road. They engineered a custom cradle and trailer configuration for the rotor.
Multi-Modal Mastery: The solution involved:
Ocean: A Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel from Hamburg to San Antonio, Chile, chosen for its heavy-duty ramps and deck strength.
Land: Coordination with the Chilean government for road closures and permits. Use of self-propelled modular trailers (SPMTs) with independent axles to navigate the tight mountain curves.
Risk Management & Insurance: Rock Global provided a single, comprehensive insurance policy for the entire journey, covering the multi-million dollar cargo and mitigating risk for TerraForm.
The Result:
Flawless Execution: The rotor was delivered to the exact installation point on schedule, without a single scratch or incident.
Project on Track: By ensuring the critical component arrived on time, Rock Global enabled the power plant project to stay on its critical path, avoiding millions in potential delay penalties for TerraForm.
Reputation Enhanced: TerraForm successfully fulfilled its most complex delivery contract to date, enhancing its reputation as a reliable global supplier for major energy projects.
